VIC:Shot woman refused to drop knife - police

A police sergeant shouted to a woman wielding a knife to drop the weapon before he
shot her in Melbourne's north this afternoon.

It came after a wild domestic argument where she reportedly attacked a vehicle with
a pick-axe after ramming it with her own car.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman says the woman in a stable condition in hospital, after
being shot in the lower leg in Epping.

Assistant Commissioner STEPHEN FONTANA says the woman had confronted a man, before
slamming the pick-axe through the window screen of his car.

A police sergeant arrived just in time to see the woman slash the man across the face
with a knife.

The five people were clearing up rubbish when an excavator punctured a drum, releasing
gas into the air.

They complained of a burning sensation to their eyes, headaches and a shortness of breath.

"They were taken to Rockhampton Hospital and are in a stable condition," the spokeswoman said.

A decontamination unit is at the scene.

Ms Gillard said details of how the compensation will be delivered will be announced

"But clearly we can provide assistance to Australian households through our tax and

It's widely expected the government will deliver the compensation via tax cuts for

Ms Gillard was talking at a coal-fired power station that has just undergone a $35

Fed: Don't expect rate rise reward for saving: banks

Fed: Don't expect rate rise reward for saving: banks

By Stephen Johnson

CANBERRA, April 7 AAP - People who keep their money in savings accounts shouldn't expect
to be rewarded after the latest rate rise, the banking industry says.

The major banks have so far failed to pass on official interest rate increases to customers.

They have even reduced interest payments as the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised rates.

The Australian Bankers' Association says savings account customers should not expect
their interest levels to rise in tandem with an RBA rate rise.

"Australian mortgages are not funded by savings accounts so the assertion that savings
haven't gone up with the cash rate has very limited bearing," chief executive Steven Munchenberg
told AAP.

"I don't accept the premise that somehow banks are cheating by not passing on."

Savings accounts are less lucrative for banks than term deposits.

"Because of their volatility, they're a less attractive source of funding," he said.

ANZ, NAB, Westpac and the Commonwealth Bank have so far failed to pass on increases
in the cash rate to existing savings accounts with more than $5000 in them.

The average interest has been stuck at 3.9 per cent, even though the RBA raised the
cash rate for a quarter of percentage point in April.

The interest level is actually half a percentage point lower than it was late December,
even though rates have risen twice since then.

Australia Institute senior fellow David Richardson, a former Labor adviser, said the
Rudd government needed to consider re-regulating how banks pay interest on deposit accounts.

That would take Australia back to the 1980s, before the Hawke government embarked on
banking deregulation.

"There's a case for opening up debate on that," Mr Richardson told AAP, adding the
big four banks made $35 billion in profits in 2009.

Three-year term deposit accounts with $10,000 to $25,000 in them have also had little
movement, with average interest stuck at 6.6 per cent.

The rate actually fell from 7 per cent to 6.6 per cent in March, even though the RBA
increased rates by a quarter of a percentage point during that month.

Mr Munchenberg said term deposit interest rates did not fall sharply in late 2008 and
2009 when the RBA cut rates aggressively.

Canstar Cannex financial analyst Peter Arnold said interest on savings accounts was
more closely tied to the RBA cash rate, while interest on term deposit accounts was linked
with money market movements.

He was hopeful the banks would put up interest rates on savings accounts in coming days.

But customers with less than $5000 in the banks aren't likely to be so lucky.

Interest on these accounts with the big banks has been set at zero since December 2001,
Mr Richardson said.

Previously, these accounts paid 0.05 per cent interest.

QLD: Councils save for future battles with state govt

By Gabrielle Dunlevy

BRISBANE, Aug 25 AAP - Queensland councils, still reeling from the effects of forced
amalgamations, have started a fighting fund to ward off any future attacks by the state
government.

Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) president Paul Bell told the peak
body's annual conference in Brisbane that councils and ratepayers remained "deeply disillusioned"

by the state government-led amalgamations, which cut 157 councils to 73.

"The state government implied that after amalgamation there would be less ratty little
councils and larger councils would get more of the funding cake," Mr Bell said.

"Instead they've got a pikelet, without the jam and cream."

Mr Bell said the March 2008 amalgamations had only worsened councils' financial problems
in the short term and would take years to create efficiency gains.

Cost structures had to be changed to save ratepayers from endless rate rises but legislation
stopped councils restructuring their workforces until 2011, he said.

Mr Bell announced the LGAQ had started a $600,000 fighting fund, to be boosted by $100,000
a year in operating spending.

"The fighting fund will grow to millions of dollars over the next five or so years
and be a sizeable deterrent to capricious or unconscionable behaviour towards Queensland
councils by the current or any future state government," he said.

But Premier Anna Bligh said the mayors she had talked to were already experiencing
positive economic spin-offs.

"I know that there are still some councils who don't like it but what it's delivering
is very important economic reform to the people of Queensland," Ms Bligh told reporters
in Brisbane.

"In every place where those mayors are really working hard to make it work, what they
tell me is they're already reaping benefits."

Mayors reported they could more effectively market their regions, employ high-skilled
people, plan for future growth and negotiate with multinational companies, Ms Bligh said.

"I believe there's possibly some ADF people with some minor injuries," Mr McRoberts said.

The Royal Australian Navy would continue to search for the missing until there were

Mr McRoberts said it was too early to tell if the explosion was deliberate or not.

What Australian newspapers say on Thursday, December 11, 2008

AAP General News (Australia)
12-11-2008
What Australian newspapers say on Thursday, December 11, 2008

SYDNEY, Dec 11 AAP - Human rights are a cornerstone of Australia's national life which
are best protected by democracy and the rule of law, The Australian says in an editorial.

As Jesuit lawyer Frank Brennan and his panel set about consulting Australians about
human rights policies and laws, the weight of evidence against a bill or charter of rights
is compelling. Paradoxically, it would be more likely to undermine democracy and personal
liberty than enhance them, at vast expense, as lawyers enjoyed not a picnic, but a banquet.

A week ago, The Australian says it pointed out that those clamouring for a charter
of rights have been unable to explain how the community would benefit by stripping power
from elected politicians and handing it to unelected judges. Since then, the arguments
advanced by proponents of a bill or charter have been unconvincing.

In her Human Rights Day oration, Catherine Branson, president of the Australian Human
Rights Commission, complained that innocent people, including children, had been unjustly
detained and that Australia had deported its citizens.

In its submission to the 2020 summit, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission
claimed that current legal arrangements did not adequately protect citizens from human
rights violations. In support of its case, it cited Cornelia Rau, the Australian resident
wrongfully detained by immigration authorities, and Vivian Alvarez, wrongfully deported
to The Philippines.

Those cases were prime examples of bureaucratic bungling and heartless officialdom.

They showed why our migration scheme needed reform to work more flexibly, efficiently
and humanely. Part of the slowness in processing refugee claims, too, stemmed from human
rights lawyers clogging the courts with asylum-seeker cases with little chance of success.

A charter of rights, too, could impede the system.

Australia needs a bill of rights, The Age says.

Australia is alone among liberal democracies in not having a national charter of rights.

That might be finally about to change, if the national consultation announced by federal
Attorney-General Robert McLelland finds widespread support for a charter.

The Age says it has long argued that common law and the parliament offer insufficient
protection of basic human rights, and that at least a statutory charter, adhering to the
principles underlying the Victorian charter, should be adopted nationally.

The consultation that the federal government has announced should be the beginning
of a national conversation on the rights and duties of citizens, and no aspect of the
question - including the possible entrenchment of rights in the constitution - should
be excluded from that conversation.

Some proposals before the federal government that would change how retirees can use
their superannuation risk turning Australia into a nanny state, The Herald Sun says.

The way Australians should spend their superannuation should be their decision.

Making retirees take all or part of their super as an annual income is one of the more
ludicrous options in a review of tax and retirement arrangements.

The suggestion is that your super should be some sort of annuity, meted out against
the prospect of living beyond your life expectancy.

A more realistic view would be to replace welfare payments with meaningful tax breaks
that would keep older people in the workforce and saving.

Instead of being pushed into too-early retirement, they would be able to live their
golden years in dignity and comfort.

It's rare to see real innovation in public policy, but we felt its touch this week,
The Sydney Morning Herald says.

The NSW Ports Minister, Joe Tripodi, announced his solution to the problem of under-capacity
at the port of Newcastle: ships on their way to the port to pick up coal will be monitored
using satellites, and told to slow down if there's a queue. By this simple means the long-running
problem of huge numbers of vessels waiting off the coast will be removed.

The thing has a certain genius to it, and we wonder if the same approach might be applied
elsewhere. Cars approaching the city of a morning could be told to slow down to reduce
congestion on the F3 and the M5. Ambulances bearing patients towards overcrowded hospitals
might be ordered to circle the block until the hospital staff had time to see them.

The paper said it was joking and maybe should not, given the seriousness of the problem
at Newcastle and the absurdity of the proposed "solution". Yet it's difficult to know
how else to respond to an action so emblematic of the state government's chronic inability
to plan or act in the state's interests, the paper said.

Homeowners in Sydney's west copped a belting earlier this year through high interest
rates and ridiculous fuel prices, The Daily Telegraph says.

It was as though events were conspiring against the west, Sydney's primary driving
force for growth and development. How quickly things change. And, in this case, for the
better.

Now we have the unexpected - but very welcome - situation whereby houses worth less
than $500,000 in areas like Camden and Campbelltown have actually recorded rises in market
value.

The rises aren't massive, averaging just more than 1 per cent. But in the current economic
climate this is a little like finding gold - during a mine collapse.

Still, the boost in values turns around a five-year trend of falling prices in the
west - a trend that has not been much noticed during out-of-control property boom times
in harbourside areas.

If the change in the west can be viewed as an overdue "correction", what to call the
9 per cent drop in housing values in places like Woollahra and Waverley?

This is an indicator of the first big economic shockwaves hitting our city. How we
ride this out will depend on many factors, not least among them consumer confidence. At
least the west is doing its bit to keep Sydney buoyant.

The Queensland government's new draft regional plan, which it released for comment
this week, is a high-minded, big-picture attempt to work out how to fit another 735,000
homes into southeast Queensland in the next two decades, The Courier-Mail says.

One of the keys to solving this enormous challenge is, in the words of the plan itself,
"an extensive and efficient public transport system". It is impossible to disagree with
such an obvious truth.

But, as with all such visionary and aspirational documents, the words are one thing;
turning them into action is another matter entirely. The state government will point to
its billions of dollars of new transport infrastructure now under way - its busways and
train lines and investments in new rolling stock - as evidence that it is indeed delivering
on its promises.

And that is fine, although it is fair to ask in the current economic climate, just
how much of the government's ambitious future capital works program is at risk from lack
of funding, either from the public purse or from the private sector.

Qld: Govt to review fire service

BRISBANE, Feb 13 AAP - The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) will be reviewed
in a move to boost frontline services, the state government says.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts told state parliament today the review would
identify any areas where resources could be redirected to the frontline.

The QFRS was last year allocated a record budget of $360 million, up $36 million from
the year before.

"I want to be reassured we are maximising these resources onto the front-line," Mr Roberts said.

The review comes after the government ordered a similar study into the Queensland Ambulance
Service late last year.

The government has since promised to overhaul the ailing ambulance service by axing
bureaucrats and finding more paramedics.

But Mr Roberts said the QFRS review would not mirror the ambulance audit because the
fire service was not experiencing the unprecedented demand facing the QAS.

"Unlike the Queensland Ambulance Service, demand for Queensland Fire and Rescue Service
assistance has remained reactively stable in recent years," he said.

"For example, over the past five years ambulance demand has increased by a massive
46 per cent compared to 9.7 per cent for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service."

Mr Roberts said the QFRS remained one of the top fire services in Australia, with 50
per cent of cases responded to in under seven minutes.

He said 97.6 per cent of cases were responded to in under the 14 minute benchmark.

Fed: Rudd see chance to fix state-federal conflict

CANBERRA, April 12 AAP - Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd says the election of a federal
Labor government could herald a new era of harmony with the states and territories.

Friday's meeting of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) appears headed for
conflict with rows brewing over ports congestion, climate change and a $7 billion demand
from the states for a national reform agenda.

Mr Rudd says it is time to end the blame game between Canberra and the states and establish
clean lines of responsibility.

He quotes the Business Council of Australia as saying $9 billion is wasted in overlaps
between state and federal administration.

The Labor leader says becoming prime minister would present a unique opportunity for
him to fix the problem.

But Treasurer Peter Costello argues Mr Rudd would be unable to say no to the demands
of the Labor governments in all eight states and territories.

Mr Costello said in London this week that an inexperienced Labor prime minister would
be beholden to his state counterparts for finance and influence.

He says the coalition government will keep the premiers and chief ministers honest.

The Labor leaders are coming to Friday's meeting with a political agenda, the treasurer says.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks is confident COAG will endorse the reform agenda, which
focuses on human capital, transport, energy and regulatory changes.

He does not believe his failure to follow other state leaders in signing up to the
federal government's $10 billion water security plan would hurt the reform agenda's chances.

SYDNEY, Dec 11 AAP - Australians who have cancelled their travel plans to Fiji will

Fiji's Reserve Bank is expected to not devalue the nation's currency today when Deputy

This is needed to stop resort operators getting money out of the country through large

The New York Democrat's bid to establish the panel _ which would have also made recommendations on how to improve the government's disaster response apparatus _ failed to win the two-thirds majority needed to overcome procedural hurdles.

IDC Declares Linux Is Red Hot in the Server Market.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., April 10 /PRNewswire/ --

According to the latest release of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, Linux server shipments increased 166% to 72,422 units in Q499 from Q498, representing the fastest- growing operating environment in the server market.

"Even though Linux represents a small portion (approximately 6%) of the entry server market in unit shipments, it will become an important area of growth within the server market as more and more branded vendors come out with Linux server offerings and as end users select Linux servers not just because of price but because of reliability, availability, and performance as well," said Hoang Nguyen, senior research analyst for IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker.

For the quarter, Compaq held tight to its number-one position worldwide with $84 million in factory revenue. IBM is in the second position with $33 million. Dell was third with $24 million, and Hewlett-Packard was close behind with $23 million. (In terms of unit shipments, Hewlett-Packard finished third slightly ahead of Dell.) Fujitsu Siemens rounded off the top five vendors with $13 million.

In a recent IDC survey of 200 Linux users (Linux Servers: What's the Hype, and What's the Reality? IDC #B21610), the majority of participants estimated that their Linux servers offered at least 4 9s in availability, which translates to less than one hour of unexpected downtime per year. The study also found that Linux servers are overwhelmingly deployed to support Web applications, such as Web hosting, proxy/caching services, and email. "More than 40% of all spending on Linux servers is for Internet-related applications. Linux servers are now embedded in the Internet infrastructure and are strong competition for NT and Unix entry servers," said Michelle Bailey, research manager for IDC's Commercial Systems and Servers program.

IDC defines the entry market as systems shipped with prices from $0 to $100K.

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker is the premier quantitative tool for analyzing the global server market on a quarterly basis. The mystery of migration.(Teaching through Trade Books: Activities inspired by children's literature)("Going Home: The Mystery of Animal Migration" and "Great Migrations")

The migration patterns of animals have long been a source of wonder and awe. From the 6-mile journey of the army ants in the rain forests of Costa Rica, to the 20,000-mile journey of the sperm whale through the world's oceans, we are fascinated by these animals' ability to recognize when it's time to leave and where to go. The lessons in this month's column explore what we know about animal migration and what still remains a mystery.

Synopsis

Based on the National Geographic Channel's special Great Migrations, this book features eight very different animals with one thing in common, they migrate.

Curricular Connections

The National Science Education Standards suggest that in grades K-4, students should learn that an animal's patterns of behavior are related to that animal's environment and that when the environment changes, some animals stay and survive, some die, and some migrate. In the K-4 lesson, students learn through a read-aloud about 10 different animals that migrate, map their migration routes, and discuss reasons for migration. It is important for students to know that not all animals migrate, that there are other ways animals deal with changes in the environment. So in this lesson, students research how local animals respond to the changing seasons. Students in grades 5-8 go more in depth into the study of behavioral adaptations by addressing migration as a response to internal or environmental stimuli. In the lesson for grades 5-6, groups of students choose an animal from Great Migrations, research the migration patterns of that animal, share their findings, and discuss the internal cues and external cues that animals use to determine when it is time to migrate. Then, students join with another group to create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting two migrating species. Both lessons end with a discussion of what is known about migration and what still remains a mystery.

Grades K-4: Going Home

Engage

Before class, print out several sets of bookmarks with pictures of the 10 animals featured in Going Home: The Mystery of Animal Migration, available on the Dawn Publications website (see Internet Resources). Give each group of 3-4 students a set of bookmarks. Show students the cover of Going Home and read the first page aloud. Tell them that as you read the rest of the book, you are not going to show them the pictures because you would like them to infer from the text which animal you are reading about. After reading the left-hand page for each animal, ask students to hold up the bookmark with the picture of the animal they think you are reading about. Then, read the right-hand side of the page about that animal and show them the picture.

Explore

Provide each pair of students with a simple world map and several markers or colored pencils. Read the section in the back of Going Home titled, "Find Their Route" which describes the migration route of each of the animals featured in the book. Have students find the route of one of the animals described in the reading and show the migration path that animal takes by drawing a double arrow in one color. Repeat for each of the animals using a different-color arrow, and then have them create a key that shows what each color of arrow represents. For younger students, you may want to do this together on the overhead. When they have all the animals' migration paths on the maps, have a discussion about how the routes compare, which is the longest, or the shortest.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Explain

Read the section in the back of Going Home titled, "About the Migrating Animals," and ask the students to listen for the reasons that each animal migrates. Then, have groups of students sort the animal bookmarks by the reason for migrating (e.g., finding food, laying eggs, finding warmer temperatures). Ask, "Do any fit in more than one category?" Students will realize that some animals, like the manatees, migrate to be in warmer water and to find more food. Next, have them sort their animal bookmarks into groups based on how they travel (e.g., fly, swim, walk). Last, students can create some of their own categories for sorting the animals.

Elaborate

Ask students whether any of the animals featured in Going Home live any part of their lives in your area. Research the animals in your area that migrate. Your state Department of Natural Resources website might be a good place to start. It is important that students understand that not all animals migrate--some hibernate, become dormant, or have adaptations that allow them to continue to live in the same place during the changing seasons. Print out pictures of some of your local animals and have students sort them into two categories: Migrates or Does Not Migrate. Map the migrations of some local animals and discuss why they migrate.

Evaluate

Read the section in the back of the book titled, "The Mystery of Migration." As you read, ask students to listen for the reason the author calls migration a mystery. Discuss what they have learned about migration, and what questions they still have. Discuss the migration mysteries that scientists are still learning about such as: How do animals know when it is time to migrate? How do they find their way?

Grades 5-6: Great Migrations

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Engage

Make a list on the board of the following animals: Mali elephants, red crabs, monarch butterflies, jellyfish, zebras, army ants, wildebeests, and sperm whales. Then ask students what the animals might have in common. Post photos of these animals where all can see, and allow students time to turn and talk to a partner about their ideas. Have students share their ideas with the whole class, then show them the cover of Great Migrations. Tell them that all of those animals migrate, or make a regular journey from one place to another. Then read aloud pages 10 and 11 about Great Migrations, which this book is based on. Tell students that they are going to work in groups to become experts about the migration of one of the animals in the book. Read each two-page photo spread aloud, skipping the informational pages in between. You may want to leave out the name of each animal as you read and have students infer which animal is being described. After you read, have each student write his or her name and top three animal choices on a slip of paper. Use these to form research groups.

Explore

Provide each group with the animal migration scoring sheet (see NSTA Connection) and a copy of Great Migrations (or a laminated two-page spread of their animal). Tell them that they will be collecting a variety of information about their animal to share on a poster, but the big question they should be thinking about is "How Do They Know When to Go?" They should use the book as well as the National Geographic Great Migrations website, which contains amazing videos and additional information about animal migrations (see Internet Resources).

Explain

Have students display their posters around the classroom or in the hallway. Set up a "gallery walk" in which they circulate around the room to view the posters. Have each student write a comment and a question on a sticky note and place it on each poster. After the gallery walk, the poster groups can answer some of the questions they received. Tell students that one of the mysteries of animal migration is how the animals know when it is time to migrate. Create a t-chart labeled "External Migration Cues" in the first column and "Internal Migration Cues" in the second column. With the class, make a list of external cues that tell animals when to migrate (e.g., amount of sunlight, changing seasons, and food or water availability). Then make a list of internal cues (e.g., fat reserves, hunger, thirst, or hormonal changes). Ask students whether the animal they researched uses internal cues or external cues or both. They will find that many animals use both.

Elaborate

Next, have each group of students combine with another group to create a large Venn diagram that compares and contrasts the animals each group has been researching. This will give each group a chance to teach some of what they have learned and compare their animal's migration pattern to other animals. Post these Venn diagrams in the room.

Evaluate

Assess student learning on their posters and Venn diagrams. Last, discuss the idea that many aspects of migration remain a mystery to scientists. Ask students what they are still wondering about migration. Have each student jot down a question they have, then have each group choose the most compelling question at their table to discuss.

FacetCorp Releases FacetWin Version 3; Internet Modem Server and PC Backup Added to All-in-One Windows to UNIX Integration Software Solution.

PLANO, Texas, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- FacetCorp has released FacetWin Version 3, which includes a new Internet Modem Server and PC Backup utility. Both features can be configured through the PC Agent, a new graphical interface for the user.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19991018/DAM017 )

The Internet Modem Server allows PC users to share a bank of UNIX modems in order to access the World Wide Web and for use with other Windows 95/98 applications. Many smaller to medium-sized companies are still looking for an economically efficient way to get Internet access for their employees.

FacetWin's Internet Modem Server provides an exciting new option for businesses with a UNIX server(s). FacetWin Version 3 offers both increased user productivity by providing immediate internet access from the PC, and reduced hardware and telephony costs by not requiring the purchase, installation and maintenance of a separate modem and phone line for each PC.

The PC Backup/Restore feature provides the UNIX system administrator and individual PC user with the capability of backing up PC files to a UNIX system disk or tape. This completely new PC Backup includes such functionality as full or incremental backup, data compression, backup of multiple PCs (in one operation) to multiple tapes and multiple tape drives, large file support (over 2GB), and automated/scheduled operation. The user may select PC files for backup through the easy-to-use, Explorer-type interface. Most companies today are still not doing an adequate job of backing up files on employee PCs. With the PC Backup feature in FacetWin Version 3, companies can easily and cost-effectively reduce the risk of data loss.

FacetWin Version 3 also comes with a new PC Agent component that runs on the Windows PC. In addition to allowing the user to manage their modem access configuration and PC Backup settings, the PC Agent allows coherent messages to be sent to the user from the FacetWin file/print servers, as well as providing a means for the system administrator to send direct messages to the user(s).

After an extensive testing program, the feedback from the beta-sites was extremely positive:

"FacetCorp has always provided an excellent software product and superior technical support," says Charles Redding, VP of Information Systems with Budget Group, Inc. "And with FacetWin Version 3, it seems they have done it again!"

"FacetCorp has, once again, succeeded in their efforts to bring unparalleled functionality to the UNIX market," comments Todd Robinson, MIS Director with Flowers Direct. "The new Internet Modem Server feature in FacetWin Version 3 will enable our PC users to access the UNIX modems from their PC applications. This functionality will give each of our individual PC users internet access without adding another phone line to every desk!"

"The new PC Backup/Restore feature in FacetWin Version 3 represents an important step in PC to UNIX integration and especially the data protection of our 250 PC clients running FacetWin," says Mark Pemberton, Senior Programmer/Analyst with Management Directions of North Carolina. "This feature gives us a flexible solution for backing up the individual PCs to UNIX disk or tape, which has not been possible until now."

"The FacetWin Version 3 beta software loaded smoothly and performed flawlessly," commented Geoff Bleau with SCO reseller Florida Software and Data. "We look forward to presenting the Internet Modem Server and PC Backup/Restore features to our customers."

"The Internet Modem Server in FacetWin Version 3 fills a significant void in today's UNIX market," said Bill Demers, Marketing Manager with FacetCorp. "The PC Backup/Restore function is a powerful addition that completes FacetWin as an all-in-one Windows to UNIX integration software solution," Demers explained. "FacetWin Version 3 is in a class above other connectivity tools because it is a complete solution, but packaged and priced like a single feature product."

FacetWin provides a complete solution for Windows-to-UNIX integration, including transparent file & print services, terminal emulation, internet modem server, PC backup/restore, POP 3 email server, Simple Sign-On (SSO) and graphical administration. FacetWin includes an all-in-one feature set that allows users of Windows and Windows NT PCs to transparently access and use the UNIX network resources (such as files, disks, Windows applications, and printers).

FacetWin differs from existing connectivity alternatives in three important ways. 1) At a technology level, FacetCorp based the file and print services in FacetWin upon the Common Internet File System (CIFS) formerly known as SMB. This is the primary system that Microsoft Windows uses for networking PCs. Many other connectivity products use the UNIX-oriented Network File System (NFS) method of loading NFS software on each PC to enable it as a UNIX NFS client. Instead, FacetWin provides a UNIX CIFS server (that requires no additional software to be loaded on the PC) to get transparent file and print services. CIFS was chosen for FacetWin because it is extremely easy to install and administer (since FacetWin administration can take place from the UNIX server), and because of its good performance. 2) From a product packaging and customer value standpoint, FacetCorp has bucked the trend to unbundle and sell individual components separately. Instead, FacetWin provides a complete all-in-one PC/UNIX integration software package. By continuing to price it as a single feature product (even when adding new features!), FacetWin competes very well when the customer is looking for only a single integration component (i.e. file/print services), and any additional features simply become a strong differentiator. Of course, the FacetWin value becomes even more apparent, when more than one feature is needed (i.e. terminal emulation and file services, or terminal emulation and internet modem services). 3) From a technical support perspective, FacetCorp is unmatched in the industry. Whether for a presale evaluation or an existing customer, FacetCorp provides free technical support for their products. Customers continue to be amazed when they call with technical questions, and they are readily able to talk to a real person who has detailed knowledge of FacetWin and networking in general.

FacetWin Version 3 pricing is based on the number of users, and remains unchanged from FacetWin Version 2. U.S. Pricing begins at $195 for a single user with significant discounts for multi-user licenses. FacetWin Version 3 will be automatically shipped to all Version 2 customers who are currently under maintenance. For existing FacetWin customers not under maintenance, upgrades to Version 3 are available at approximately 65 off from recommended list pricing -- contact FacetCorp for specific pricing. FacetCorp offers free 30-day evaluation copies of the product from their World Wide Web site (http://www.facetcorp.com) and through their established channel of worldwide distributors.

Job seekers should mind Internet posts.(News)

Job seekers should mind Internet posts

Many online job ads simply don't represent real jobs.

An Internet aggregator may be collecting your information for other marketing purposes. Ever ask yourself why companies want to know what you are being paid in your current job?

And if your resume actually goes to a real employer, keywords may be the only part that is 'seen' and then by a software robot using keywords to cut the list of candidates. The odds are that without the most effective keywords, your resume will never rise to the level of even being considered.

And now you know why your job application was never even acknowledged.

Today, job applications must have a customized resume, detailing your qualifications for the position you want. Your name will be searched and if you are active on social media sites, what you have posted will be considered against the information you have provided in your resume.

You may be your own worst enemy if your online behavior and digital track record fails to reinforce the image you are projecting in your resume.

Assuming the job exists, employers prefer someone who is doing the work for which the advertisement is offered.

Employers want your skill set, your experience completing tasks, and the results you are creating for others.

Times are a'changing every day and social media is playing an increasing part in that change.

Finding a better job is hard work and finding a job to replace one you may have lost is even more challenging.

* VFW Post 5036 and the Fox Valley Troop Support groups for supporting the "Salute Our Troops" venue and the Letters to the Troops booth. We had more than 80 letters written to the soldiers overseas by our attendees.

* And certainly, the thousands of residents who turned out to experience the festival in St. Charles.

Without the support and participation of everyone mentioned above, Pride of the Fox RiverFest would not be the memorable, annual event that it has become.

Mark your calendars for June 8-10, 2012, for the 30th Birthday Bash. We hope to see you there.

Alpheus Communications Announces IPv6 Capability.

Network and Data Center Operator Grows with InternetO

HOUSTON -- Today Alpheus Communications announced an important network upgrade. As the legacy Internet addressing protocol (IPv4) reaches its limit, Alpheus has successfully implemented IPv6 across its fiber network. Internet Protocol Version 6 allows for vastly more addresses than was previously possible. Like IPv4, IPv6 is an Internet Layer protocol for packet-switched internetworking and provides end-to-end data transmission across multiple IP networks.

Francisco Maella, Chief Operating Officer of Alpheus, said, "This is a major enhancement that we have been planning for over a year. Our customers can now grow as fast as the internet does." Alpheus accomplished a seamless upgrade using technology from Alcatel-Lucent. "We are ready to support cloud technologies, wireless data and the potential of the public network generally to improve people's lives," continued Maella. Alpheus also supports circuit-switched connectivity and can easily configure hybrid architectures for companies transitioning from incumbent standards to Internet Protocol and metro Ethernet.
