Eastcom Will Resell CommWorks' Industry Leading IP Telephony,

Softswitch and Wireless Products

CommWorks, a 3Com Company (NASDAQ: COMS), and Eastern Communications Co., Ltd. (Eastcom), one of the largest listed company in China's telecommunications industry, today announced they will collaborate on delivering advanced Internet Protocol (IP) based technologies to telecommunications service providers.

Eastcom, one of China's largest telecommunications equipment manufacturers, will act as a system integrator and reseller of CommWorks' industry leading IP telephony, softswitch and wireless data access products for the China market, under terms of the agreement.

"With the widespread deployment of CDMA wireless technologies and the rapid adoption of IP telephony, China and all of Asia continue to be high-growth markets for our product lines," said Irfan Ali, president, CommWorks. "Working with Eastcom enhances our ability to reach service provider customers with the technologies that allow them to offer their customers a new class of innovative communications services."

In their first joint initiative, the two companies have commenced interoperability testing of their products for high-speed CDMA2000 1XRTT wireless networks. Customer trials of the joint CommWorks/Eastcom solution are planned for the second quarter of 2002 with one or more wireless service providers in China.

"Eastcom is committed to delivering to the marketplace innovative, cost-effective technologies for high-speed wireless networks," said William Chow, president, Eastcom. "By working with CommWorks on an open, standards-based 3G network architecture, we are maximizing options for service providers to deploy these high-speed networks and deliver to their customers advanced services and features."

CommWorks' products involved in the interoperability testing include the Total Control(R) 1000 Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN), the point of entry into the wireless packet data network for mobile subscribers; and the Total Control 1000 Home Agent, which terminates Mobile IP tunnels and serves as the anchor point for Mobile IP subscribers. CommWorks provides the core data networking technology in major CDMA2000 1XRTT networks either deployed or in development in Asia and North America.

CommWorks is among the world's leading providers of carrier-class IP telephony equipment and is the softswitch market leader, according to Infonetics Research [Next-gen Voice Products Quarterly Worldwide Market Share and Forecasts, Feb. 19, 2002] and Synergy Research Group, Inc.
