Aust to give $5.7m a year in aid finding to Pacific islands

Australia has formally signed up to provide $5.7 million annually over three years
for aid programs in the Pacific.

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says most of the money, $3.6 million, will go directly
to support the operations of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.

The remaining $2.1 million each year will go towards priority programs including coastal
fisheries, community health, education and training, demography, statistics and a women's
resource bureau.

The triennium funding comes on top of existing aid projects which Australia funds at
about $5 million annually.
