Fed: Australia becomes nation of arts fans - report
The Australia Council has revealed almost twice as many Australians visited an artgallery or performing arts event in a year than went to the football.
Statistics released by the council suggest Australia is increasingly becoming a nationof culture vultures as much as sports fanatics.
Figures for 1999 -- the latest available -- show 55 per cent of Australian adults attendedeither an art gallery of performing arts event.
In the same year, only 30 per cent went to the football.
The council's chief executive JENNIFER BOTT suspects Australians are diversifying ratherthan abandoning their traditional sporting interests.
